Prague - Mirek Topolánek, who was a Prime Minister of the Czech Republic in years 2006-2009, attempts to get a job in Enel, the largest Italian electricity firm.

Aktuálně.cz has learned that in the last months, Topolánek has repeatedly talked to representatives of the company, including people around Italy's PM Silvio Berlusconi. The last meeting took place on Thursday 2 September.

Enel has power plants in many countries and focus above all on nuclear energy.

In one month it should be clear whether Topolánek will work for Enel, and on what position.

"Until then, (Topolánek) should prepare his idea of what he should do in the company," a highly reliable source informed about Topolánek's plans said to Aktuálně.cz.

Aktuálně.cz asked Topolánek himself about the issue, however the ex-PM responded with a text message saying "Blah, blah, blah", showing once again that communicating with journalists is not his favorite past-time.

Slovakian connection

A different source from the Czech electricity industry confirmed to Aktuálně.cz that the negotiation between Topolánek and Enel is really taking place. In addition, the source says that Topolánek's associates approached Slovakia's PM Robert Fico - before he was voted out from the office in June elections - to help with the negotiations.

Enel is a majority owner of Slovenské elektrárne, a Slovakian electricity company, and currently is building two new blocks of the Mochovce nuclear power plant. Although Slovaks have no influence over Enel's decisions, Robert Fico is known for having good contacts on Berlusconi and his government.

Plan B: International Energy Agency

Topolánek's former colleagues from the right-wing Civic Democratic Party (ODS) have not participated in the negotiations. His successor as the party's chairman, Petr Nečas, only said that he would help his predecessor to get a job in the OECD's International Energy Agency.

However, Aktuálně.cz's sources say that the IEA is Topolánek's "plan B", with his primary aim being Enel. In addition, the posts in IEA's management are to be occupied no sooner than in 2011.

Topolánek himself has a friendly relation with Italy's PM. In 2008, when Topolánek was still PM, he vacationed in Berlusconi's villa in Sardinia, together with some other European politicians. Later, in 2009, photographs showing PM in a rather embarrassing situation were published by Spanish El País and subsequently by other European and Czech newspapers (more here).
