Prague - It was a very cold start to the new year, indeed, with temperatures well below average across Europe. And it was yet another freezing start of the day this morning in the Czech Republic.

Wednesday morning saw temperatures at about -20C and on Thursday morning temperatures again dropped deep below minus 20C. What more, meteorologists expect Friday morning to be even frostier.

There were 4 cm of new snow that came overnight in the region of Liberec in north Bohemia and Ostrava in eastern part of the country.

Typically, the mountain regions experienced the coldest weather with Šumava mountains recording -24C.

The village of Šindelová in the northern part of the country, which used to be a popular leisure spot for Czech aristocrats and once was visited by German poet J.W. Goethe, recorded polar night temperatures at -23C.

Most towns struggled at about -13C to -12C. Pilsen recorded - 13C, Prague-Ruzyně -12C  and Karlovy Vary -11C but the lowest temperature was noted in the town of Přerov in the eastern part of the country -17C.

This week started with icy roads and finally some snow all over the country. It seems the cold theme is going to continue for a few more days.

Friday morning should see temperatures around in the range of -13C and -17C, at some places  -20C. In the mountains temperatures could drop down to -25C overnight and -5C to -9C over the day.

Over the weekend temperatures should reach -10C to -14C in the morning and -1C to -6C over the day.
