Prague - Merely one third of Czech citizens see the democratic system working as it should.

The public opinion on the state establishment is the worst since 2003.

This is the result of the latest poll conducted by STEM agency in June.

In 2003, 33 percent were content with the state of democracy in the Czech Republic, now it is only one percent more.

Czechs are generally not aware that Czech democracy can be compared to the Western European political systems. Only 30 percent see the Czech political system as comparable to that in Western Europe.

However, this indicator grew by six percent since 2003.

Coalition supporters disappointed too

Typical of any poll, respondents of different age, political background, economic status and education vary vastly in their views.

But even supporters of the ruling coalition´s parties are not happy about the state of democracy in the Czech Republic.

"Critical opinions are relatively strong even among those who sympathize with the ruling parties," states the authors of the poll.

Alienation among Green sympathizers?

Among the supporters of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) almost every third (32 percent) is critical, in the case of Christian Democratic (KDU-ČSL) supporters it is 42 percent, and in the case of the Greens it is as much as 57 percent.

It is apparent that disappointment of the Green party supporters partially stems from the parliamentary representation of the party which puts forward projects that are often unpopular among the party members. This includes the planned US radar base.

Numerous fights and conflicts among the party representatives, so often medialized, are also to be blamed.

On the other hand, almost two thirds of ODS (Civic Democrats) voters are satisfied. It is above all entrepreneurs, people of better economic status, right-wing oriented people and those who have higher levels of education who are in that group.

The poll took place in June when 1244 people older than 18 were polled.
