Klaus says Lisbon treaty will create a Euro-nation

Prague - Czech President Václav Klaus welcomes the decision of the Senate to submit the Treaty of Lisbon to the Constitutional Court.

Constitutional judges are to decide whether the treaty is in accord with the Czech constitution.

"The decision of the Constitutional Court will be and probably will remain for a long time one of the most important and most influencial in the history of the Czech constitutional justice," wrote Klaus in a letter to the court.

The Senate's decision to ask the Constitutional Court for a decision on the issue was primarily based on Civic Democratic (ODS) senators' initiative.

The ODS has majority in the Czech Senate, and it has never tried to hide its euro-skeptic stances. 

European nation being constructed

President Klaus suggests that the court focus on a number of major topics: sovereignty, effect of EU regulations, the inexplicit nature of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union or the delegation of authorities on the European level.

In addition, Klaus warns that the EU will longer be an international organization after the Lisbon treaty is ratified.

"The Lisbon treaty envisions a European civil society existing paralel to civil societies of individual member states. Thus a sort of European nation state  is being constructed," believes Klaus.

Referendum in Ireland

Lisbon treaty is to provide basic framework for all European law, including inner market, human rights as well as foreign and agricultural policy

National parliaments are to decide on the treaty in most countries. Only Ireland have announced they will hold a referendum on the issue.
